Analyse the opening sequence of the film 'From Hell':

Analyse the opening sequence of the film 'From Hell' looking at the following:

* Genre - Horror/Thriller clear from red, cloudy sky foreshadow the 'horror' genre.

* Information revealed through sound - Non-diegetic intro music is slow, harmonious and spooky revealing a mysterious horror/thriller genre. The non-diegetic music continues when viewing the slums but we can hear the diegetic sounds of family chatter. The diegetic sound of horse and shackles shows the slum life and hard labour is of the norm in the Whitechapel District. Lots of diegetic aggressive chatter in the background.

* Camera - Camera views the house and red sky as a wide shot showing this place is very important in the movie, then slowly goes down to where the people are in the house or street foreshadows that the sky will fall and all terror will run loose. The camera is one continuous shot from the sky line through the street, showing the severity of life and danger that is present in their lives. Tracking camera shot behind a drunk man with a beer. Medium close up of two girls, then tracking shot of one girl showing she will be more important. The tracking shot of the girl suggests someone is following her and then the close up of the two men aggressively pinning the girl against the wall suggests terror and danger.

* Editing - The editing fades from a mans mouth to a woman's eyes suggests a connection and further suggests that the man may be after the woman in some way or just to cause terror and she is affected badly. The quick cuts between the close ups of the men and the girl suggests action is about to take place.

* How does the mise-en-scene reveal information about the character, genre an narrative - London, 1888, lots of red sky foreshadows using pathetic fallacy. View from camera shows different floors of slums which represents that all the people are effected by the terror. 'From Hell' title is in red which connotes blood and terror. The man is seen to be smoking in the opening sequence which may suggest he is under influence and not of sane mind. There is a dead man lying on the floor showing the 'terror' genre and that death is normal and common as only one many is pulling the body away, as well as many homeless people trying to get food. (CLAMPS) Costume, all wearing old fashioned/peasant like clothes which shows the time and harsh life. Lighting is dark and the dark scenes portray horror in the film as only lit by street lamps which tells us that it is night time and a dangerous area as lots of people are about. The dark alleyway suggests violence.
