'Scream' - Texture Analysis

'Scream' Texture Analysis

How can you tell it's a horror?
What editing/camera and sound techniques are used to signify the horror genre?

Mise-en-scene:
* Knives - danger
* Fire - danger
* Character cries and facial expressions - express her fear
* Scream mask - scary face
* Dark lighting inside house
* Night time outside - connotes danger that something is about to go down
* All white, colourful clothes - pure, innocent victim
* Blonde girl dies (stereotypical)
* Dark costume contrasts girls pure clothes (juxtaposition between innocent and sinister)
* Slow beginning then builds up until the chasing
* Blood covered girl after being stabbed
* Popcorn bubbling up as the scene gets faster as well and the popcorn explodes when the girl dies symbolising her fate.
* Vulnerable, alone in the house and in a derelict location isolated house
* Lots of glass shows she is more vulnerable as it shows she is being watched
* In the kitchen making popcorn (stereotypical)

Camera: Tilting down shot shows sky/tree then house showing the big isolated house showing location and vulnerability, fast zoom into her face shows the scene is speeding up, camera tracks her around the house showing she is alone and alive, medium close up at the beginning alongside the diegetic sound highlights the innocence of the girl speaking to the man with a sinister voice, Dutch tilt begins to make the movie feel like a horror as it shows the glass door and nightime outside, fast zoom in showing she is suddenly now in danger and fear.
Sound: Diegetic sound of sinister voice on phone, dialogue of horror movies (naive blonde woman), diegetic popcorn sound increasing tension, non-diegetic sound of mysterious music tells us to be scared all of a sudden, repetitive phone calls of diegetic ring tone emphasises the danger by building up the fear, when she runs the non-diegetic sound gets faster to match her heart beat, synchronous and diegetic sound of creaking of the swing and birds to show the swing has been moving to tell us someone has been there, diegetic sound of knives sliding out, diegetic synchronous sound of dog barking shows she is being watched and that someone is there.
Editing Techniques: Eye-line match to outside the house shows her fear, Editing gets faster when she runs connoting danger, quick cuts increase in tempo to match the sound, heightens the tension and fear of the scene, Match on action edit, cuts on her moving towards the phone - highlights her nativity, the slow scene with no cuts and he playing with the knives and talking to the man about horror films shows her stupidity and emphasises her nativity.  Match on action for her locking doors showing her fears and vulnerability
