Three Point Lighting

What is three point lighting? Three point lighting is a technique used in film making to help develop the scene further to look more realistic. It consists of three lights, key light, fill light and back light, each with different objectives: Key Light: Is the 'main light' source on the subject Fill Light: This light helps the 'key light' by filling in the shadows created by the key light and preventing it from getting too dark. Back Light: The 'back light' ensures the subject is separated clearly from the background

.

Example of this is the movie Kill Bill whereby we can clearly see the way lighting is used effectively to make it more meaningful to the viewer. In the initial scene you can see the darkness making the audience feel scared and the coffin makes the viewers feel trapped as well as the lighting emphasises the tight space. In contrast the second scene in the coffin shows more brightness connoting hope to the audience that she might live and get out.
