Analysis of the 'Goodfellas' opening sequence

Sound:

1. Synchronous sound is used at the beginning of the opening sequence as the car driving past at a very fast pace. This sound is definitely synchronous as it matches what is happening on screen. The synchronous sound which is also diegetic helps to build excitement and suspense for what is about to happen, which makes the audience more on edge.

2. Diegetic dialogue is used in this opening to help the audience understand what is going on. Once the men in the car hear the banging which is synchronous sound as well they begin speaking and wondering to themselves what the noise is. The banging along with the confused dialogue show how the group aren't organised and connotes that something is about to happen which therefore makes the audience aware of this.

3. Diegetic and non-diegetic sound of the gun shot puts emphasis on the murder and brutality of the killing as there were multiple gun shots.

4. Non-diegetic ambient sound of birds chirping helps to build up suspense just as the men are about to open the boot as it exaggerates the isolated location and that something bad is about to happen.

Camera:

1. Close up shot shows the driver from the shoulders up, this shows he is a key protagonist in the movie.

2. The wide angle shot enables the audience to see a wide view of the scene therefore they will feel the tension as they know it is building up to something as you can see the dark, nature and trees in the background which connotes something bad is going to happen

3. The low angle wide shot just before they open the boot shows power and that three protagonists are in control against the defenseless victim. Additionally, it connotes something bad to the audience and prepares them for what is about to come...murder.

4. The canted angle/wide shot of the camera slowly zooming in on the car further connotes dark ideas that something bad is going to happen this therefore creates suspense and keeps the audience on edge.

Editing:

1. Extended camera time shows that the driver is a key force in the movie and calls a lot of the shots out of the three men in the car as the extended time shows seriousness.

2. The quick cuts between the men killing the victim and showing the victim getting stabbed and then shot show the brutality and cruel nature of the killing.

3. Furthermore, the match on action editing is used to
show different angles of the scene as it is a fast paced scene so this is successfully used.

Mise-en-scene:

1. The opening sequence is set in a dark, isolated location as you can hear the birds chirping and see the nature in the background. This connotes that something dark and dangerous is about to happen as the location suggests so.

2. All three men are wearing smart clothes which resembles some sort of duty or mission that they are on, whereas the victim is covered in a sheet swallowed in blood from the brutal beating and stabbings he has taken.

3. Props such as the knife and gun are evidently used as weapons and instantly alerts the audience of the protagonists in the film and who the bad guys are.

4. The low key lighting emphasises that murder is about to happen as the darkness in lighting suggests dark actions will follow which the audience can feel as  a result of the dark lighting which of course is supported by the brutal murder.
